John 10 – Today is Day 10 of the 21 Day Gospel of John Challenge. Today read the 10th Chapter in the Gospel of John. #John10
John 10
The 10th Chapter has 42 verses with having two headings.
1. Parable of the Good Shepherd
Verses 1-21
This is a known parable about sheep and the Good Shepherd. First check this post out to find out what sheep are.
Shepherding was a popular occupation during that time. The Shepherd was responsibility for the total care of the sheep. Defending them was one of the task.
The thief in this parable is referring to the devil. Jesus said these words that most of us all know …
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
John 10:10
Jesus is the one who gives life, while the devil is the one who brings death.
Only a Good Shepherd will lay down their own life for the sheep. That is where the protecting comes into play. They will risk their own life to depend the sheep from predators. This could include wolves, bears, any kind of wildlife that would come to eat the sheep. It could also mean defending the sheep from those who would come to steal the sheep or take wool from the sheep.
Jesus also illustrated that only the Good Shepherd would do this. While a hired hand, someone to fill in for temporary, etc. would not. They wouldn’t care. They would only think about themselves and not the sheep.
In Matthew and Luke, Jesus mentions the Good Shepherd also leaves the 99 for the one lost sheep. He comes looking for us! Read this post on When Sheep Go Astray.
2. Jesus Asserts His Deity
Verses 22-42
This setting was during the Feast of the Dedication. Held during Hanukkah.
The Jews were wanting Jesus to plainly tell them He is the Christ. Jesus answered them …
“I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.
John 10:25-26
We continue on talking about sheep.
The Jews picked up stones in which they wanted to stone Jesus. He was also telling them that He is doing the work of the Father and yet you all still don’t believe. Jesus was able to get away and not be stone.
