John 5
There are 47 verses in the 5th chapter of the Gospel of John to read. This chapter also has 7 headings:
- The Healing at Bethesda
- Jesus’ Equality with God
- Two Resurrections
- Witness of John
- Witness of Works
- Witness of the Father
- Witness of Scripture
1. The Healing at Bethesda
Verses 1-17
Now we get into more of the miracles that Jesus performed. This one was healing a lame man who was trying to get into the stirring of the waters.
Whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.
John 5:5
Jesus saw a man who was unable to get into the waters and asked if he wanted to be healed. He did. Jesus told him to pick up his pallet and walk. He began to walk.
2. Jesus’ Equality with God
Verses 18-24
John shares that the Jews were seek even more ways to kill Jesus because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. (John 4:18)
He also shares to them that He is the one that judges. We answer to Jesus for judgement.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John 5:24
We must believe in Jesus to gain eternal life!
3. Two Resurrections
Verses 25-32
Jesus now talks about those dead in the tombs who are saved, born again, who will raise up. Jesus also lets them know his judgement will be just. He is not like a crocked judge. Jesus says His Will is the Will of the Father.
4. Witness of John
Verses 33-35
This is a short paragraph in this chapter. Just saying that John testified the truth.
5. Witness of Works
Just one verse here, verse 36. That is the Works of Jesus Christ. It is sent to testify that God send Jesus.
6. Witness of the Father
Just two verses here. Verses 37-38.
In order to know, you must hear His voice and know His voice. Just like sheep, we will know our Shepherds voice.
7. Witness of Scriptures
John 5 ends with the witness of scriptures in 9 verses. See verses 39-47.
In this section you see the mention of searching scriptures for eternal life. Plus, you see they were unable to get life, because they did not come to Jesus Himself. The people there was willing to receive others, but not Jesus.
The chapter ends with these two verses …
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
John 5:46-47
If they truly believed what Moses had wrote, of which they read and I’d say was familiar with, they should have believed that Jesus was who the Father had sent. But they didn’t believe both Moses and they didn’t believe the Words that Jesus spoke to them.
