Color Book Day

Color Book Day – I am not talking about a coloring book. But a book that commemorates the day in 1457 when the Mainz Psalter was printed. Containing the Book of Psalms and being commissioned by the archbishop of Mainz. #ColorBookDay

It is believed the Mainz Psalter was the first color book using contracting colors for printing. The blue and red colors are used throughout for large initials and capital letters.

Mainz Psalter

This Color Book reminds me of the Saint John’s Bible I saw in an exhibit.

This day is celebrated annually on August 14. Searching for this day, I couldn’t find much. Mostly it kept going to coloring book day, which is what I thought at first.

Mainz Psalter was the second major book printed with movable type in the West. Did you know the Gutenberg Bible was the first printed on movable type.

Movable type: system and technology of printing and typography that uses movable components to reproduce the elements of a document (usually individual alphanumeric characters or punctuation marks) usually on the medium of paper.
