Verse one of Chapter 11 tells us what faith is …

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

But this one is geared for those of faith. I like what Pastor Allen Bonnell of Immanuel Baptist Church of Corbin, KY stated, the first part of Hebrews 11, states … we. (Sermon on April 26, 2015). I never noticed that part, until I heard that sermon. I knew about the others listed.

He also gives two thoughts. The first one is Jesus is greater than all of our fears. This was five years ago, and how true that is today in 2020.

Paul mentions Jesus is greater at least four times. Uses the word better or greater. (Hebrews 11:16 – Home in Heaven; Hebrews 11:26 – Better Possessions; Hebrews 11:35 – Resurrection; and Hebrews 11:40 – Plan).

The other is We do the absurd because Jesus is greater.

That is us, you and I. The one part of the Faith Hall of Fame that is never mentioned or preached. We are part of that Hall of Fame, just by having faith in Christ.

Some Bible’s will headline this as The Triumphs of Faith.

We (You and I)

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

Hebrews 11:3
  1. We (You and I)
  2. Abel
  3. Enoch
  4. Noah
  5. Abraham
  6. Sarah
  7. Isaac
  8. Jacob
  9. Joseph
  10. Moses
  11. Rahab the harlot
  12. Gideon
  13. Barak
  14. Samson
  15. Jephthah
  16. David
  17. Samuel
  18. & Others (No names given)

Rahab is the only one listed that had a title to her name. The title of harlot, also known as a prostitute. That prostitute is in the lineage that goes to Jesus!

A lot of them were tortured, jailed, sawed in two, beheaded, killed, and more. No matter the cost! Being a Christian isn’t always easy.

The book of Hebrews in the New Testament is known for its emphasis on faith and perseverance, especially in the face of adversity. The eleventh chapter of this book is often referred to as the “faith hall of fame” because it lists numerous examples of men and women in the Old Testament who demonstrated remarkable faith in God. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at Hebrews 11 and explore what it can teach us about faith.

The chapter begins with a definition of faith: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, ESV). This definition highlights the fact that faith involves trust and belief in something that cannot be seen or proven. It requires a willingness to take risks and to trust in God even when circumstances seem bleak.

The rest of the chapter provides examples of individuals who demonstrated such faith. The first example is Abel, who offered a better sacrifice to God than his brother Cain and was commended as righteous. The chapter then moves on to Enoch, who walked with God and was taken up into heaven without experiencing death.

Next is Noah, who built an ark in obedience to God’s command and was saved from the flood. The chapter also mentions Abraham, who left his home and traveled to a new land in response to God’s call, and who was willing to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience to God.

The list goes on to include Sarah, who had a child in her old age despite being barren, Moses’ parents who hid him as a baby, Moses who led the Israelites out of Egypt, and Rahab who protected the Israelite spies. All of these individuals demonstrated remarkable faith in God, even in the face of adversity.

What is interesting about this list is that it includes individuals from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. Some were wealthy and powerful, while others were poor and marginalized. Some were obedient to God from an early age, while others came to faith later in life. But what they all had in common was their willingness to trust in God and to follow His leading, even when it was difficult or unpopular.

The faith hall of fame in Hebrews 11 can serve as an inspiration to us today. It reminds us that faith is not just about believing in God, but also about trusting in Him and obeying His commands. It also shows us that faith is not just for the “spiritual elite,” but is available to anyone who is willing to trust in God and follow His leading.

In conclusion, Hebrews 11 provides us with a powerful reminder of the importance of faith in the Christian life. The examples of individuals who demonstrated remarkable faith in God serve as an inspiration to us today, reminding us that faith is not just a belief, but a way of life. May we all be inspired to follow in their footsteps and to trust in God in all circumstances.
