The human body was designed so that …

The human body was designed so that we can neither pat our own backs nor kick ourselves too easily.

While it’s true that the human body may not be optimized for certain movements or actions, the idea that our bodies were “designed” implies a deliberate intentionality behind our creation. We are made in the image of God.

This might suggest self-pride or self-praise when patting ones own back. While the other, might suggest the opposite that we are being too hard on ourself.

Batting your own back

The phrase “patting yourself on the back” means to give yourself praise or recognition for something you have accomplished. It is a figurative way of saying that you are congratulating or complimenting yourself. The phrase can be used in a positive way to acknowledge a job well done or to boost your confidence, but it can also be used in a negative way to describe someone who is overly self-congratulatory or arrogant. Overall, the phrase implies that the person is taking credit for their own success or achievement.

Kicking yourself

The phrase “kicking yourself” is an idiomatic expression that means to feel regret or disappointment about something that you have done, or failed to do, that has resulted in a negative outcome. It is a figurative way of saying that you are angry or frustrated with yourself for making a mistake or missing an opportunity that could have led to a better outcome.

For example, if you missed a great deal on a product that you really wanted to buy, you might say, “I’m kicking myself for not buying it when it was on sale.” The phrase can also be used more generally to describe any situation where you feel that you have made a mistake or failed to take advantage of an opportunity that you now regret.

Physical limitations

That being said, there are certainly some physical limitations that make it more difficult for us to pat our own backs or kick ourselves. For example, the human shoulder joint has a limited range of motion when reaching behind the back, which can make it challenging to pat one’s own back without contorting the body in an uncomfortable way. Similarly, the hip joint has limited range of motion when trying to kick oneself in the rear end.

More flexible

However, it’s worth noting that some people are more flexible than others, and with practice, some individuals may be able to pat their own backs or kick themselves with greater ease. Often you eat these type of people as contortionist. Additionally, the limitations of our bodies can be overcome with the help of tools or other resources, such as using a foam roller or massage ball to reach the upper back.

So we all still can and do pat our own backs as a figure of speech of being prideful and kick ourselves, as we are often our own worst critiques and can be very hard on ourself.

But God, two great words … will not let us get away with either. He will punish those He loves and bring repentance for the pride, plus He died to save us when we do wrong. The blood of Christ made it as if we never sinned since Jesus took on our sins on the cross. We shall not continue to live in our sin.

Knowing Christ Today by Dallas Willard — Willard’s work confronts a critical issue in modern Christian thought: the separation of Jesus’ teachings from what is considered genuine knowledge. The book’s aim is to reestablish the core teachings of Christianity—often referred to as “Mere” Christianity—as a substantial and recognized form of knowledge¹[1].
