National Day of Prayer 2024 - Lift up the World - Light up the World — The National Day of Prayer is a significant event that brings people together across the United States to seek divine guidance, intercede for the nation, and lift up prayers for various aspects of society. In 2024, the theme is “Lift Up the Word - Light Up the World.” Let's explore the significance of this theme and how we can participate in this powerful day of prayer.

The 2024 Theme: “Lift Up the Word – Light Up the World” — The theme draws inspiration from the words of 2 Samuel 22:29-31:

For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

2 Samuel 22:29-31
  1. Lift Up the Word: As believers, we recognize the power of God’s Word. It illuminates our path, guides our steps, and provides hope. On this National Day of Prayer, let us lift up the Scriptures, declaring their truth and relevance in our lives.
  2. Light Up the World: Darkness surrounds us—spiritually, morally, and socially. But we are called to be light-bearers. Just as a lamp dispels darkness, we can shine forth God’s love, truth, and compassion. Let’s pray for revival, transformation, and healing in our communities, nation, and world.

Prayer Points

  1. Church: Pray for unity, revival, and boldness among believers. May the Church be a beacon of hope, proclaiming the Gospel and demonstrating Christ’s love.
  2. Family: Lift up families—marriages, parents, children, and extended families. Pray for restoration, healing, and strong foundations.
  3. Education: Pray for educators, students, and schools. May wisdom, integrity, and godly values prevail in educational institutions.
  4. Business and Economy: Pray for ethical business practices, economic stability, and opportunities for all.
  5. Military and Government: Intercede for our armed forces, leaders, and public servants. Pray for wisdom, justice, and protection.
  6. Arts, Entertainment, and Media: Pray for creativity that honors God and influences culture positively.

Conclusion

As we gather on the National Day of Prayer, let us remember that our God is our lamp, our light in the darkness. Together, we can lift up the Word and light up the world. May our prayers bring transformation and healing to our land.

Past National Day of Prayers

About the National Day of Prayer: The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

Knowing Christ Today by Dallas Willard — Willard’s work confronts a critical issue in modern Christian thought: the separation of Jesus’ teachings from what is considered genuine knowledge. He argues that this division has led to a catastrophic misunderstanding of what it means to know Christ and live according to His teachings. The book’s aim is to reestablish the core teachings of Christianity—often referred to as “Mere” Christianity—as a substantial and recognized form of knowledge¹[1].
