What to Do When You See a Car Stuck on Railroad Tracks

What to Do When You See a Car Stuck on Railroad Tracks

1. Assess the Situation

Upon spotting a car stuck on railroad tracks, follow these steps:

  1. Stay Calm: Keep a level head and assess the situation.
  2. Check for Safety: Ensure your own safety first. Do not put yourself at risk.
  3. Observe the Car: Note the car’s position, distance from the tracks, and any signs of occupants.

2. Call the Number on the Blue Sign

  1. Locate the Blue Sign: Look for a blue sign with an emergency contact number. These signs are often placed near railroad crossings.
  2. Call the Number: Dial the provided number and report the incident. Provide details about the car’s location and any visible hazards.

3. Contact Emergency Services (911)

  1. Call 911: After notifying the railroad authorities, call 911 immediately.
  2. Provide Information: Inform the dispatcher about the situation, including the location, description of the car, and any potential danger.

4. Warn Others

  1. Signal Oncoming Traffic: If possible, use hazard lights or other signals to warn approaching vehicles.
  2. Alert Pedestrians: If pedestrians are nearby, warn them to stay away from the tracks.

Remember, safety is the top priority. Always follow the proper procedures and avoid putting yourself in harm’s way. By acting swiftly and responsibly, you can help prevent accidents and protect lives.

911 can’t stop those trains! Only that number on the blue sign by the railroad crossing can signal all trains.
