The bluetick coonhound has been just as synonymous with the Tennessee Volunteers s September since 1953 … see chart below.
On September 26, 1953, the University of Tennessee Pep Club hosted a contest to find a hound dog worthy of representing the school. An ad placed in local newspapers declared, “This can’t be an ordinary hound. He must be a ‘Houn’ Dog in the best sense of the word.” During halftime of the Mississippi State game, Reverend Bill Brooks entered his blue tick hound, Blue Smokey. As Smokey was introduced, he let out a loud howl, prompting cheers from the crowd. Encouraged by the applause, he howled even louder. That spirited moment earned Blue Smokey the honor of becoming UT’s first live mascot.
