The words “flannel” and “plaid” are often used interchangeably, but they are referring to two different things. Flannel is a material or fabric (wool or cotton and slightly milled and raised) and not a pattern. In contrast, plaid is a pattern. You usually see plaid on flannel shirts.

Usually, you think of flannel with outdoor wear. But they can be used for common causal wear too. I have a red/black plaid, black/gray plaid and green/black plaid that I like wearing. Flannel is usually warm clothes, great to wear in cool weather.
