The Greek word for “followers” is “μαθητής” (mathētēs), which is translated as “disciple” or “learner” in English. It appears 261 times in the New Testament and has the Strong’s number G3101.
The Greek word for “apostle” is “ἀπόστολος” (apostolos), which means “one who is sent out” or “messenger”. It appears 80 times in the New Testament and has the Strong’s number G652.
- Simon Peter: According to tradition, Simon Peter was crucified upside down in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. He requested this method of execution as he felt unworthy of dying in the same manner as Jesus.
- Andrew: Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was crucified on an X-shaped cross in Greece. This cross is now known as the St. Andrew’s cross.
- James, son of Zebedee: James was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred. He was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa I in Jerusalem.
- John: John, the brother of James, was the only one of the twelve apostles who was not martyred. However, he did suffer persecution and was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he received the revelation that is recorded in the book of Revelation.
- Philip: According to tradition, Philip was martyred in the city of Hierapolis in modern-day Turkey. He was reportedly crucified upside down, similarly to Simon Peter.
- Bartholomew: Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, is believed to have been martyred in Armenia. He was reportedly flayed alive before being beheaded.
- Thomas: Thomas, also known as Doubting Thomas, was reportedly martyred in India. He was speared to death while preaching the gospel.
- Matthew: According to tradition, Matthew was martyred in Ethiopia, where he was reportedly stabbed to death by a sword.
- James, son of Alphaeus: Very little is known about James, the son of Alphaeus. According to some traditions, he was stoned to death in Jerusalem.
- Thaddaeus: Thaddaeus, also known as Jude, is believed to have been martyred in Armenia. He was reportedly beaten to death with a club.
- Simon the Zealot: Simon the Zealot is believed to have been martyred in Persia. He was reportedly sawn in half.
- Judas Iscariot: Judas Iscariot infamously betrayed Jesus and later hanged himself.
In conclusion, the disciples and apostles of Jesus played a critical role in spreading the gospel message. Many of them suffered martyrdom for their beliefs, but their legacy lives on through the Christian faith.
