The American Standard Version Bible

The American Standard Version (ASV) Bible, also known as the Revised Version or the American Standard Version, is a revision of the King James Version of the Bible. It was first published in 1901 by the American Revision Committee, which was composed of 30 Protestant scholars from various denominations. #ASV

The American Standard Bible was intended to be a more accurate and faithful translation of the Bible than the King James Version. The committee worked from the original Greek and Hebrew texts, and their translation was based on the principles of formal equivalence, which means that the translation is as literal as possible while still being understandable in English.

One of the major differences between the American Standard Bible and the King James Version is the use of archaic language. The King James Version uses language that was common in 17th-century England but is no longer in use today. The American Standard Bible, on the other hand, uses modern English that is easier for contemporary readers to understand.

Another major difference is the inclusion of marginal notes in the American Standard Bible. These notes provide additional information about the translation, such as alternative readings from other manuscripts or explanations of difficult passages. The King James Version does not include such notes.

The American Standard Bible has had a significant influence on modern Bible translations. Many later translations, such as the Revised Standard Version and the New American Standard Bible, were based on the American Standard Bible and its principles of formal equivalence and modern English.

Despite its influence, the American Standard Bible is not as widely used today as other translations, such as the King James Version or the New International Version. This is partly due to its formal style, which can be more difficult for some readers to understand, and partly due to the popularity of other translations.

Overall, the American Standard Bible is an important translation that has helped to shape the modern English Bible. Its commitment to accuracy and modern language has made it a valuable resource for scholars and readers alike, and its influence can be seen in many of the translations that followed it.
