Who was John Wesley
Wesley’s upbringing was heavily influenced by his mother’s piety and devotion to God. She taught him the importance of prayer, Scripture reading, and self-discipline. Wesley’s education was also guided by his mother, who home-schooled him until he was old enough to attend Oxford University.
At Oxford, Wesley excelled in his studies and became a fellow of Lincoln College. While at Oxford, he and a group of students formed the “Holy Club,” which was focused on living a holy life and doing good works. Wesley’s dedication to his faith and his love of God led him to become a missionary in the American colonies in 1735.
Wesley’s time in America was challenging, but it was also a significant period in his life. It was during this time that he began to develop the ideas that would later become the foundation of Methodism. Wesley saw the need for a more personal and emotional approach to Christianity, one that focused on an individual’s relationship with God rather than simply following the rituals and doctrines of the church.
After returning to England, Wesley continued to preach and spread his message. He traveled extensively throughout the country, preaching in churches, fields, and open spaces. His message resonated with many people who were looking for a more personal and emotional connection to their faith.
Wesley’s approach to Christianity was not without controversy, however. Many in the Church of England saw his message as a challenge to their authority and beliefs. Wesley was often criticized and even attacked for his views. Despite this opposition, Wesley continued to preach and spread his message.
Wesley’s legacy continues today, more than two hundred years after his death. The Methodist Church, which he founded, has grown to become one of the largest Protestant denominations in the world. Wesley’s emphasis on personal piety, social justice, and evangelism has had a significant impact on Christianity as a whole.
