This health awareness holiday occurs each year on March 24. World Tuberculosis Day is a day to help raise public awareness of tuberculosis and the epidemic it has on the world. It causes nearly one-and-a-half million deaths per year. Mostly found in developing countries. The day commemorates from 1882 when Dr. Kobert Koch announced he discovered the cause of the TB bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

TB is preventable and curable, but many people even in the United States still suffer from this disease.

The U.S. theme for World TB Day 2020 is “It’s Time!”

The U.S. theme for World TB Day 2018 was “Wanted: Leaders for a TB Free United States. We can make history. End TB.”

1907 – Clemens von Pirquet developed the tuberculin skin test for TB infection.

1944 -Leaders for a TB-Free United States. Robert Koch discovered the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB). Albert Schatz, Elizabeth Bugie and Selman  Waksman developed streptomycin, the first antibiotic effective against TB.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s deadliest diseases:

  • One-fourth of the world’s population is infected with TB.
  • In 2017, 10.0 million people around the world became sick with TB disease. There were 1.3 million TB-related deaths worldwide.
  • TB is a leading killer of people who are HIV infected.
