Real ID License for Tennessee – this ID will be for those that don’t have a passport and used to enter federal buildings, military bases and even fly domestically.
These new Real ID’s will be available to Tennesseans staring July 1, the Real ID is done up with the Tennessee Driver License.
If you fly an airplane, it is required that you have this new Real ID by October 1, 2020.
Non-compliant driver licenses and identification credentials issued beginning Summer 2019 will display the phrase, “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” on the front of the credential.
You do NOT need a REAL ID to:
- Drive
- Vote
- Purchase alcohol or cigarettes
- Access hospitals
- Visit the post office
- Access federal courts
- Apply for or receive federal benefits such as social security or veterans’ benefits
The new license will not cost more than the original one.

When you go to renew your license you will have to present proper documentation, same as what the state has always required in the past when you come in to Tennessee:
- Social Security Card
- Birth Certificate and/or Passport
- Two proofs of residency
