National Workplace Napping Day

National Workplace Napping Day – A day set aside for napping at work! What? I wouldn’t recommend that, but here is the info about that day. Napping Day a day to take a siesta and relax because we lost an hour sleep from time change.

National Workplace Napping Day

Napping is good for you! Napping Day is held each year the day after Day Light Saving Time. This day was created to give everyone time to get a nap in for the hour they loves from Springing Forward with time, time change.  As you can see this day is both called National Workplace Napping Day and also Napping day for short. The recorded first time this day was celebrated dates back to 1999 from creators illiam Anthony, Ph.D., a Boston University Professor and his wife, Camille Anthony.

This day was part of an effort to spotlight the health benefits to catching up on quality sleep.  “We chose this particular Monday because Americans are more ‘nap-ready’ than usual after losing an hour of sleep to daylight saving time,” Anthony said in a Boston University press release.

Advantages of Napping

Based on information gathered from thousands of nappers and would-be-nappers, the Anthony’s have identified the following eight significant advantages of napping:

  1. Napping improves mood – makes you feel better
  2. Napping improves performance – makes you more productive
  3. Napping is no cost – no expensive clothes or equipment needed
  4. Napping is no sweat – no shower needed
  5. Napping is self prescribed – no doctor’s orders needed
  6. Napping is non-fattening – you cannot eat while napping
  7. Napping is a non-invasive procedure – no one does anything to you
  8. Napping has no dangerous side effects – unless you are driving

A nap is a short or brief period of sleep and relaxation. Taking naps are said to help productivity. However, I don’t recall any work places that allows for a nap break. I do remember being in Kindergarten and taking naps. In Spain they do a time-honored tradition of taking a siesta after the afternoon meal. While in Italy they call it riposo, pisolini.

They usually say a good 10-15 minute nap is ideal. Even places show productivity increases from taking a small little nap during the day. It even helps you feel rejuvenated. But, I am sure you are like me, there is no place or time to take a nap during work.

A 2001 survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that 63 percent of Americans do not get enough sleep.

ZZZ’s!
