National Waffle Day – Do you like Waffles? I know I like waffles. This is a day for those who enjoy eating waffles.
On August 24, 1869 the first United States waffle iron patent was issued to Cornelius Swarthout from Troy, NY. So that is how they came up with having National Waffle Day on August 24th of each year. It has been said that waffle irons have been around since the 14th century. It wasn’t until around 1911 the first electric waffle iron came out by GE. However when this holiday started is unknown.
I do honestly believe I prefer waffles over pancakes. I do like me some waffles. Waffles are eaten around the world. A waffle is formed from batter that is cooked between to hot plates, sometimes called irons. Today, these shapes can be square, circle or even character shaped too.
I love to add butter and even syrup on mine! I also enjoy eating mine with sausage or bacon.
Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Waffles come in many forms. Depending on the type of batter or iron used, the resulting waffle varies by consistency, size, shape, and flavor.
You can even top your waffle with chocolates, fruits, whipped topping and many more items too.
What is a Waffle?
A Waffle is batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape, and surface impression. Usually topped with butter and syrup. I actually prefer these over pancakes.
This day is celebrated on different days depending on where you are located.
- March 25 in Sweden (Vårfrudagen or Våffeldagen– our Lady’s Day)
- July 19 in India
- August 24 in the United States
Some people love Chicken and Waffles. I watched an episode of Worst Cooks Celebrity Edition and one of the challenges the celebrities had to make was fried chicken and waffles.
Just Plain Waffle Day is held March 25 of each year, which is celebrated in Sweden and a few other places around the world, however, in the United States, it is celebrated in August.
