National Pretzel Day is Celebrated Annually on April 26th
Do you like your Pretzels from the bag … those hard and salty ones the soft ones that come in various flavors like Auntie Anne’s?
Did you know the Pretzel has a form of Christian roots? According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, “an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward to children who learn their prayers. He calls the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, pretiola (little rewards).” Another place mentioned it got its roots in France from a monastery and they twisted their communion bread then.
While many people are familiar with the pretzel’s twisted shape, not everyone knows that it was actually designed to resemble arms folded in prayer. The pretzel’s unique shape was originally created by monks in the early Middle Ages, who made small, crisp breads called pretiolas to reward children who had memorized their prayers. The shape of the pretiola was meant to resemble the crossed arms of a person in prayer.
Over time, the pretiola evolved into the pretzel that we know today, and the shape was adapted to make it easier to bake and transport. However, the pretzel’s roots in religious tradition are still evident in its design. Today, pretzels are enjoyed by people of all backgrounds and beliefs, but their history as a symbol of prayer and reward is a lesser-known fact that adds to their cultural significance.
It was also reported that the Soft Pretzel got started in the 19th Century by Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until 2003 that National Pretzel Day came into being.
I love pretzels. My favorite bagged kind is the Rold Gold Cheddar Hard Pretzels. As for soft prezels from Auntie Anne’s, I like the Original, Sweet Almond, Roasted Garlic and Parmesan, and the Pepperoni. I have never eaten at Philly Pretzel Factory, so I am not sure which flavors I would like. I am sure I would like their original pretzel too. Looking at their menu, I think I would like the Pepperoni Pretzel Melts.
