National Deep Dish Pizza Day
A Deep Dish Pizza is baked in a deep dish, mostly a cast iron skillet like. Often oil, butter and/or corn meal is used to prevent sticking. The Deep Dish Pizza is said to be founded by Ike Sewell of Pizzeria Uno in 1943. This deep dish pizza was first in Chicago, IL. This pizza is also known as the Chicago-style pizza. The crust is usually a butter crust. I know Domino’s Pan Pizza as they call it, is a butter dough. The height of most deep dish pizzas are usually three inches.
This Day is held annually on April 5. The first National Deep Dish Pizza Day was held in 2009. It was part of UNO’s 65th Anniversary celebration. They choose the date, April 5, because that is when he opened outside of Chicago, in Boston in 1979.

One thing about these pizzas, they take longer to cook and sometimes the dough in the center is still doughy or not cooked all the way. Usually most pizza places have to put these back through their ovens a second time or put back in half-way through again.

The Greeks and Romans had a bread crust dish with toppings. Greeks used to coat their bread with oils and covered it with cheese and herbs. The Romans used honey and cheese. Ironically, most Americans prefer think crust. I don’t like thin crust, I am an American. I like hand tossed and deep dish pizzas. Pepperoni is American’s favorite topping choice. I would have to say I agree on that! I also read that Congress declared a pizza a vegetable in 2011. No joke!
