National Banana Split Day. This is for those of you who like bananas, ice cream, whipped topping and a variety of other toppings all in one awesome dessert.

On August 25th of each you will find National Banana Split Day. I do like me some  banana splits. It has been awhile since I have had one. However, I do not like pineapple in mine. But you can add all kinds of toppings and types of ice cream in your banana split that you want. How this day got started is unknown at this time. If anyone knows, feel free to share it in the comments.

Wilmington, OH

Even one town in Wilmington, OH, have a Banana Split Festival every June. They believe the banana split was invented there. In this town, In 1907, a restaurant owner, Ernest Hazard, wanted to attract students to his establishment so he came up with an ice dish contest.

Latrobe, PA

However, another town, Latrobe, PA, stay it was invented there. According to that report, David Evans Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. accidentally invented the banana split and then it spread by word of mouth around 1904.


It was also reported that Walgreen’s helped to spread the banana split idea too. The Chicago, IL stores adopted the desert as their signature desert. People could come in and enjoy a banana split while waiting for their prescriptions to be filled.


What is a Banana Split?

A banana split is typically served in a long dish called a boat. It has bananas that are usually cut in half length ways. It is usually then laid with three types of ice cream. Usually Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate ice cream is used. However, you can use any three flavors you wish. It usually also has three types of syrup toppings (Strawberry, Pineapple and Chocolate). Again, you can use any syrups you want, if any. It is usually topped with Crushed nuts, whipped cream, and maraschino cherries. Again these toppings are optional and you can add anything else. You can also suit or change up for food allergies too like that with nut allergies, chocolate allergies, strawberry allergies or any other type of food allergy.
