Did you know know? August 16, 1940, marked the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, GA.

In the U.S. Army their are currently two airborne divisions that operate.

  1. The 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg, NC.
  2. The Screaming Eagles, activated on August 16, 1942 at Camp Claiborne, LA. They now currently make their home at Ft. Campbell, KY.

President George W. Bush made a proclaimation for National Airborne Day in 2002. Then on August 3, 2009, the US Senate of the 111th Congress recognized National Airborne Day with Senate Resolution 235.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim August 16, 2002, as National Airborne Day. As we commemorate the first official Army parachute jump on August 16, 1940, I encourage all Americans to join me in honoring the thousands of soldiers, past and present, who have served in an Airborne capacity. I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

George W. Bush, Proclamation

So this day is held annually on August 16 since 2002.

I want to say a special thank you to the many men and women who have served, currently serving or plan to serve.
