Names of God in the Old Testament

Word God
Word God

I saw this on a poster at church in one of Sunday School rooms. I wanted to share this with you.  It is how God is referred to in the Old Testament. Along with each one is a verse the references to that verse. These names are Hebrew. I saw this poster during our Vacation Bible School in 2012 where I was in the adult class as a student.

Even our pastor at our church will use a lot of these names especially Elohim. I also hear our pastor say Jehova-jreh too.

 Names of God

  • Elohim (Hebrew name for God) Genesis 1:1
  • Jehovah/Yahweh/Lord (Self-Exist or God of Israel) Genesis 2:4
  • El Elyon (the most high God) Genesis 14:18
  • Adonai (Our Master, Lord) Genesis 15:2
  • El-Olam (Everlasting God) Genesis 21:33
  • Jehovah-jreh (The Lord will provide, it shall be seen) Genesis 22:14
  • Jehovah-rophe (Lord who heals) Exodus 15:26
  • Jehovah-nessi (Lord our banner) Exodus 17:15
  • Jehovah-M’Kaddesh (Lord who sanctities) Leviticus 20:8
  • Jehovah-Elohim (The Lord God) Deuteronomy 6:4
  • Jehovah-Shalom (The Lord our Peace) Judges 6:4
  • Jehovah-Saboth (Lord of Host) 1 Samuel 1:11
  • Jehovah-rohi (Lord my Shepherd) Psalm 23:1
  • Jehovah-Tsidkenu (Lord our righteous) Jeremiah 23:5
  • Jehovah-Shammah (Lord is present) Exodus 48:35

It was blasphemy to say God’s name so it was only written in that time. That brings me to the point, God’s Last Name is not Damn!

There is even a Christian song with Yahweh in it. It is by Phil Wickham called At Your Name (Yahweh, Yahweh).

  1. Steve, great post thanks for sharing. My favourite name for God is Immanuel – God with us, although it only occurs twice, once in Isaiah and the second in Matthew quoting Isaiah. But it really is a beautiful thought, God with us.
