In a prior post, I mentioned Knoxville mandated face coverings for city buildings, now they followed suit with Nashville in warring face covering in public.

The Knox Co. Board of Health passed a motion Wednesday, July 1, to make wearing a face mask in public mandatory. It no longer just the city buildings! Anyone 12 or older, outdoor or indoor.

The requirement will be known as the “COVID-19 Face Covering Regulation,” and will go into effect 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 3 until further notice.

Health officials define ‘face covering’ as a device, mask or material covering the nose and mouth of a person to impede the spread of saliva and other fluids during speaking, coughing, sneezing or other intentional or involuntary action.

The regulation also states that a person who knowingly fails to wear a face-covering in any indoor public place where the wearing of face coverings is required may be subject to penalties provided by Tennessee state health, safety and environmental protection law (TCA § 68-2-602) — which is “any person who violates a county board of health regulation commits a Class C misdemeanor.”

The penalty for a Class C misdemeanor could include jail time of no more than 30 days and up to a $50 fine.

Signs must also be posted at public places, according to the regulation: “Signs consistent with the regulation shall be clearly and conspicuously posted at every entrance to every indoor public place where the wearing of face coverings is required pursuant to this Regulation by the owner, operator, manager, or other person in control of that place.”

Many other cities and states are doing the same across the country as COVID-19 cases are spiking with a lot of reopenings.

If you are traveling anywhere, might want to learn face mask laws where you are traveling too.

The KAT Bus (Knoxville Area Transit) now requires face covering on all buses and at the Knoxville Station.

On this graphic it shows a face covering can be …

  • Mask
  • Bandana
  • Neck Gaiter
  • Scarf
In the best interest of public health and to better comply with Mayor Indya Kincannon's Executive Order, beginning Monday, July 6, all passengers will be required to wear a face covering while on the bus.😷A simple bandana or light scarf will do. Masks will be available on the bus and at Knoxville Station. Let's work together to keep our community healthy.👍Thank you for doing your part! 🚌
