Firefighters risk their lives to save people. The run into a burning building, while others are running out of it. We should show support and thank these brave people.

“The role of a firefighter in today’s society – be it urban, rural, natural environment, volunteer, career, industrial, defence force, aviation, motor sport, or other is one of dedication, commitment and sacrifice – no matter what country we reside and work in. In the fire service we fight together against one common enemy – fire – no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak.”

– Lt JJ Edmondson, 1999

This day is held annually on May 4.

When you mix training and dedication you're called a PROFESSIONAL. When you mix compassion and caring you're called a FRIEND. When you mix bravery and selflessness you're called a HERO. When you mix all three you're called a FIREFIGHTER.

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4. It was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia.

A red and blue ribbon is one of the most significant symbols of International Fire Fighters Day. The color red is for fire and blue for water. These colours also are internationally recognised as representing emergency service.

Be sure to thank the firefighters you see and know for their service. Maybe you can bring them some treats to the fire station or even cook a meal for them. There are many ways you can show your support.
