God’s Word: Read It! Study It! Memorize It!

This is the sixth of six parts that tie with Talk #6 (Growth Through Study). In The Bible on the Bible series marks our sixth and last. It is on God’s Word: Read It! Study It! Memorize It! Make sure you subscribe to my blog to get the latest blog entry and kept updated on this series. (These notes I got on my Walk to Emmaus in 1998)

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

The Bible – God’s inspired Word – is the only conclusive source of wisdom, knowledge and understanding concerting ultimate realities. It is a fountainhead of freeing truths.

32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

It is also a gold mine of practical principles.

The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.

(Psalm 19:9-10)

Waiting to liberate and/or enrich the person who will pursue its truth and wealth. 2 Timothy 2:15 admonishes one to study. Paul’s instruction to in that verse (shown above) has been applied by serious Christians through the centuries as directive to study the Word of God. The only way to healthy, balanced, living is through the “rightly dividing” (Greek orthotomounta meaning “cutting straight”) of God’s Word. Such correct, straight-on application of God’s Word is the result of diligent study. The text calls us beyond casual approaches to the Scriptures, telling us to refuse to suit the Bible to our own convenience or ideology.

ὀρθοτομέω: See Strong’s #3718. orthotomeó

13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. (1 Timothy 4:13)

Paul also admonished Timothy pay attention to the reading of God’s Word, but now he emphasized studying like worker (from the Greek ergon meaning toil or effort).

ἔργον, ου, τό See Strong’s #2041 ergon

11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
(Psalm 119:11)

Psalm 119:1 (Show above) urges memorizing of the Word of God as a might deterrent against sin. Memorizing the Scriptures also provides an immediate availability of God’s Words as a sword (Part of the Armor of God). It is having it ready in witnessing and effective in spiritual warfare. (Our enemy, is the Devil!)
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)
The internal evidence of Scripture is that it is the direct revelation of God through the Holy Spirit. New ideas are not necessarily wrong because they are new, but they must stand the test of Scripture. When we go into battle, we must be sure to take our sword. We must wear the Complete Armor of God.
