Gingerbread House Day – Now there is a day set aside for a favorite Christmas pastime when families get together and build a Gingerbread House.

Yes, I know, I just blogged about a similar holiday that happened not that long ago … Gingerbread Decorating Day.
This day is held annually on December 12th.
I am not sure who started this day or when.
Gregory of Nicopolis, an Armenian monk, brought gingerbread to Europe around 992 AD. It is said he taught French Christians to bake it. That is because gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies. When baked it is sturdy and often molded into images of saints.

Brother’s Grimm was big in Gingerbread House from the tale of Hansel and Gretel. After that story, it wasn’t long before German gingerbread guilds picked up the idea and put it to a more festive use making snowy cottages made from the spicy-sweet treat.
Today there are all kinds of shapes and kinds of Gingerbread Houses, including Haunted Houses for Halloween. I even seen a Mario Castle Gingerbread House.
