Fish Symbol (Ichthys)

Fish Symbol (Ichthys) – You usually see the fish symbol mostly on people’s cars. We associate this as a Christian symbol. So what is this symbol?

Fish Symbol (Ichthys)

According to Wiki. The Fish has Symbolic meaning. ΙΧΘΥΣ, or also ΙΧΘΥϹ with lunate sigma (Ichthys) is an acronym/acrostic for “Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ”, (Iēsous Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr) contemporary Koine [ie̝ˈsus kʰrisˈtos tʰeˈu (h)yˈjos soˈte̝r], which translates into English as “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.”

In this fish symbol it has two intersecting arcs, the ends of the right side extending beyond the meeting point so as to resemble the profile of a fish. Sometimes called “sign of the fish” or the “Jesus fish”. The symbol first came about around the 2nd Century AD. During that time other religions used fish symbols too. Including one where fish was sacred to eat. It was said if you ate the fish, you would get tumors. However, scholars claim there are no links between the Christian Fish symbol and other ones used.

During Jesus time fishing was big part of life. Jesus’s disciples most of them were fishermen. Later they became fishers of men instead of fishers of fish. God even used a fish, a whale, at that, to swallow Jonah. Jesus even feed the multitude with fish too. Plus many more stories in the Bible about fishing.

One bad thing about people putting these on your cars is they mark you as a Christian. However, many people don’t act like a Christian who has one of these on their car.
