I like to add cinnamon and nutmeg to the top of mine, but mostly just cinnamon. December and Christmas time is popular for this holiday beverage including its own holiday.

Check out National Eggnog Day!

Eggnog, egg nog or egg-nog, historically also known as milk punch or egg milk punch, is a rich, chilled, sweetened, dairy-based beverage. It is traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, whipped egg whites, and egg yolks.

While eggnog itself isn’t a central theme in many movies, it occasionally makes appearances in holiday films as part of festive scenes. One notable example is the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989), where the main character, Clark Griswold, is seen enjoying eggnog during the chaotic holiday celebrations. Eggnog might also make cameo appearances in other holiday-themed movies or scenes set during the festive season. Keep an eye out for it in various Christmas and winter-themed films!

I tried to make my own homemade version, it did not turn out. It was very nasty. I think I tried one that you had to cook it. I might be able to find one online and try it and see how I like it. If I find one that I like, I will share the recipe.

Note: Only use fresh eggs. Test the egg’s freshness by placing it in a glass of water. If the egg floats, discard it, as this indicates the egg is too old. Only use eggs that rest on the bottom of the glass. This will ensure the most flavorful drink and helps to reduce the risk of salmonella or other food borne illnesses.

lesser-known facts

  1. Historical Roots: Eggnog’s origins can be traced back to medieval Britain, where a hot, ale-based drink with eggs and spices was popular. The concept evolved over time to the chilled, creamy beverage we know today.
  2. Colonial Influence: Eggnog became popular in America during the 18th century, where it was often associated with the upper class and served at social gatherings.
  3. Rum Connection: The addition of spirits like rum or brandy to eggnog is thought to have originated as a way to preserve the drink, as the alcohol acts as a preservative.
  4. National Eggnog Day: December 24th is celebrated as National Eggnog Day in the United States, recognizing the beverage’s close ties to holiday festivities.
  5. Eggnog Ice Cream: Eggnog isn’t limited to liquid form; you can find eggnog-flavored ice cream during the holiday season, offering a chilly twist on the traditional flavor.
  6. World Records: In 2013, a group in Wisconsin created the largest glass of eggnog, holding over 3200 gallons. This festive feat aimed to raise money for charity.
  7. Health Concerns: Some people may be cautious about consuming raw eggs due to the risk of salmonella. To address this, many modern eggnog recipes use pasteurized eggs or are heated to a safe temperature.
  8. Eggnog Variations: While the classic recipe reigns supreme, there are various regional and cultural variations of eggnog worldwide, incorporating local ingredients and traditions.

My favorite eggnog is Mayfield’s. However the Food City and Weigel’s Brands are good too. Cookout the restaurant has a good eggnog milkshake.

I do not drink it with rum or any other alcohol. I don’t drink at all. I have choose not to drink ever since 2012. Why Christians Shouldn’t Drink Alcohol.
