Earth Science Week

Earth Science Week – A week of science. 8 through October 14 Earth Science Week in Tennessee, which will promote the important role that geology and other earth sciences play in Tennessee’s safety, health, welfare and economy, and awareness of the dynamic interactions of the planet’s natural systems.

In 2019 This falls on October 13 to October 19, 2019. This years theme is “Geoscience Is for Everyone.”. This theme is meant to encourage individuals of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities to engage with the geosciences, whether that is as a geoscience professional, a hobbyist, or through civic engagement. Because each person has a role in the areas that geoscientists study—including Earth’s resources, natural hazards, and understanding the wonder of our environment—geoscience truly is for everyone.

“Earth Science Week is always a special week for students to learn about earth sciences and the natural world around us, We are pleased to provide these educational tools to Tennessee’s classrooms.”

Bob Martineau, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner

Lee Proclaims October 13-19, 2019 Earth Science Week in Tennessee

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has proclaimed October 13-19, 2019 Earth Science Week in Tennessee to promote awareness of the importance of geoscience.

As part of Earth Science Week, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), in partnership with the American Geosciences Institute, will distribute a limited number of Earth Science Week toolkits to science teachers across the state.

“We are glad to have the opportunity to share these resources with educators,” David Salyers, commissioner of TDEC, said. “Earth Science Week is an excellent way to make students aware of all the exciting aspects of this important field.”

The 2019 Earth Science Week theme is ʺGeoscience Is for Everyone,ʺ which emphasizes both the inclusive potential and the importance of the geosciences in the lives of all people. Earth Science Week offers learning opportunities for anyone, any age, anywhere to explore studies and careers in geosciences in the countryside, in the city, or somewhere else.

Special items in the toolkit include NASA materials on Earth observation and space; National Park Service materials on geodiversity and geoheritage; Switch Energy Project information on energy science; and various learning activities.

Governors across the United States will join Governor Lee in issuing proclamations that support Earth Science Week. Individuals and groups will celebrate Earth Science Week by participating in events in all 50 states and several other countries.

Educators interested in receiving an Earth Science Week toolkit may contact Ron Zurawski at [email protected] or (615) 532-1502. The toolkits are free while supplies last. For more information about Earth Science Week, please visit www.earthsciweek.org.

WHEREAS, the earth sciences are integral to finding, developing and conserving mineral, energy,
and water resources needed for Tennessee’s continuing prosperity; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards
such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, indoor radon, and sinkholes experienced in Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences are crucial to environmental and ecological issues ranging from
water and air quality to waste disposal; and
WHEREAS, geological factors pertaining to earth resources, hazards and the environment are vital
to land management and land use decisions made in Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, Earth Science Week is an opportunity to seek a greater understanding and
appreciation of the value of earth science research and for science teachers at all levels throughout
the state of Tennessee to undertake lessons and activities with their students directed toward the
study of earth science;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Lee, Governor of the State of Tennessee, do hereby proclaim October 13 – 19, 2019 as Earth Science Week

About AGI

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is a nonprofit federation of more than 50 scientific and professional associations that represents over a quarter-million geoscientists. Founded in 1948, AGI provides information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in the profession, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education, and strives to increase public awareness of the vital role the geosciences play in society’s use of resources, resiliency to natural hazards, and interaction with the environment.

AGI is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving the geoscience community and addressing the needs of society. AGI headquarters are in Alexandria, Virginia.

The American Geosciences Institute represents and serves the geoscience community by providing collaborative leadership and information to connect Earth, science, and people.

Note from me: I think this would be a great time to talk to your children, youth group, etc. about the Creation Story from God.

Maybe take a Trip to the Creation Museum or the Ark Encounter!
