I was a stranger, and you welcomed me. Matthew 25

This simple white flag is flown on cold wintery days. It allows everyone know that if they need a place to stay, they have one. Those people will have a nice warm place to stay instead of staying outside in the bitter cold. They call this the White Flag Nights. (A Winter Relief Ministry by First Baptist Church of Corbin).

“It’s a symbol for, it’s too cold. I give up. I can’t take it,” said Austin Carter, the senior pastor. “On these nights, we’ll be providing a warm meal for all those in our community who need it and providing hotel vouchers for folks to be able to stay at a local hotel.”

Last year, 2017, First Baptist Church in Corbin began this program. They were meat with a lot of help with this situation. “We ended up raising $60,000. We were able to put up 180 people over the course of last winter, people ranging in ages of four months old to 82-year-old senior citizens,” said Carter.

First Baptist Church in Corbin is at it again this year.

How it works

If the temperature drops below 29 degrees, the white flag will be waving and hotel rooms will be provided.

White Flag

In my opinion, this is an example of the church being the church!

Tonight the White Flag Ministry at First Baptist Church of Corbin, KY opens for its second year. On nights below 29 degrees, this ministry provides a warm meal and a hotel voucher for those in our community without shelter. Last winter we served over 1000 meals and provided shelter for 180 people, ranging in ages from 82 years to four months. For this #GivingTuesday2018, we would greatly appreciate your support, as we can only sustain this ministry through the generous support of friends and community.
