McHargue’s Mill

In July of 2017, I got to visit Levi Jackson State Park in London, KY. I visited with Heather of SimplySpokn. At this State Park in Kentucky is a gristmill. This mill is known as McHargue’s Mill. They grind corn to make cornmeal. However, when we arrived, they were cleaning up and shutting it down for the day. Speaking of the grounded cornmeal, you can also purchase some at this gristmill. A gristmill is a mill for grinding grain such as corn.

Numbers 11:8

One of the information signs caught my attention as it at Numbers 11:8 written at the top corner of the “The People went and gathered it and ground it in mills”.  Where that sign showed the importance of mills in Kentucky history.  Numbers 11:8 in the King James Version reads …  “And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.”

Leading up to the mill, you will see various kinds and types of mill stones that could be used to do different types of jobs at the mill. Which is said to be the largest collection of authentic millstones in the country! They call this collection the Library of Mountain Millstones. Plus info sign about the history of millstones. Plus, other info signs about Millstones.

The McHargue’s Mill is open from Memorial Day until October 31 of each year with the operating hours of Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Also at this State Park

Defeated Camp Burial Ground for the victims of the McNitt Company who were massacred by Indians in 1786.

Not only does this State Park offer historical facts it is also wooded with rolling hills. Plus, you can retrace the footsteps of two hiking trails that total 8.5 miles. These trails were from the last quarter of the 18th Century where more than 200,000 pioneers visited Kentucky by following Wilderness Road and Boone Trace. I haven’t hiked either of those trails, but it would be something for me to do!

Plus, there is much more to see and do there like camping!

I think this would be a great State Park to take the family due to the historical nature of this State Park. It is only about 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive from Knoxville, TN.
