The name Jars of Clay comes from the Bible, specifically 2 Corinthians 4:7: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” The band has always been upfront about their Christian beliefs and their music reflects their faith.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1995, was a huge success and earned them two Grammy Awards. The album’s lead single, “Flood,” was a massive hit and received significant airplay on both Christian and mainstream radio stations. The song’s catchy melody and powerful lyrics struck a chord with audiences around the world.

Jars of Clay continued to release successful albums throughout the 90s and 2000s, including “Much Afraid,” “If I Left the Zoo,” and “The Eleventh Hour.” They experimented with different styles of music, including folk, rock, and electronic, but always stayed true to their Christian message.

In 2005, Jars of Clay founded the non-profit organization Blood:Water Mission, which aims to provide clean water and other resources to people in need in Africa. The band has used their platform to raise awareness and funds for this important cause, and their music often reflects their passion for social justice.

In recent years, Jars of Clay has continued to release new music and tour, albeit less frequently than in their earlier years. Their most recent album, “The Long Fall Back to Earth,” was released in 2009 and showcases the band’s continued growth and experimentation.

While Jars of Clay is widely known for their music and their philanthropic efforts, one lesser-known fact about the band is that they were instrumental in helping to launch the careers of several other well-known Christian artists.

In the early 2000s, Jars of Clay founded the independent record label Gray Matters, which was focused on promoting and supporting new Christian artists. Some of the artists signed to the label included Sara Groves, Derek Webb, and Andrew Osenga, all of whom went on to achieve success in the Christian music industry.

Jars of Clay’s willingness to use their success and platform to support other artists is a testament to their generosity and commitment to building up the Christian music community. It’s an aspect of their legacy that is often overlooked, but it’s an important part of their story nonetheless.

Overall, Jars of Clay has left an indelible mark on the Christian music industry and beyond. Their music is both catchy and meaningful, and their commitment to social justice is an inspiration to many. Whether you’re a fan of Christian music or simply appreciate good music with a positive message, Jars of Clay is a band worth checking out.
