August – Did You Know?
The month of August is named in honor of Augustus Caesar and previously went by the name “Sextilis.” Sextilis referred to the sixth month of the Gregorian calendar before January and February were added at the start of the year.
Historians theorize that this month has 31 days because Augustus wanted the month to have the same number of days as July, which was named in honor of his uncle, Gaius Julius Caesar.
The traditional birthstone of August is peridot (oldest known gemstones and is green in color). This month also has another birthstone, the Sardonyx (lesser-known, is a white and brown banded gemstone once believed to have mystical powers).
The gladiolus (a vertical-growing flowers were named from the Latin “gladius,” meaning a sword) and poppy are the month’s traditional flowers.
The month of August is often referred to as the “dog days of summer”.
This 8th month of the year is also is the last full month of summer.
This month is also my birth month!
