Stop Sign

Road Signs of the Bible - Stop
Road Signs of the Bible – Stop

We are all familiar with with the eight sided octagon red sign with white words that say “STOP” inside it. This is a Stop Sign in America. It means stop, do not go, cease movement, end an action, etc. This Stop Sign is part of a new series I am going to do called, “Road Signs of the Bible”. I am sure some of you may have seen one that has “ARRÊT” written inside instead of “STOP”. Arrêt is French for the word Stop.

Sometimes we hold out hand out and up to mean stop too.

Here’s one for you, spell the word Shop. S-H-O-P. What do you do when you come to a green light. Most people reply with the word stop. But do we stop at a green light? We go at a green light. That shows we cannot trust our own selves if we know we make a mistake like that when talking, but we all know we go on a green light. Ray Comfort does this when he talks to people.

God asked us to stop a few things. One thing is worry. We are to know that He is God and He will provide and take care of us. Exodus 16 shows a great example of how God gives us what we need. He also tells us to be still and know He is God, Psalm 46:10. Being still is a form of stopping.

Also stop doesn’t always mean quit. God may be telling us to go another path or direction (to take another road). Sometimes its a test from God of our faith. Like Abraham. God told Abraham to take his son and sacrifice Issac to Him. Abraham obeyed and went to take his son off to sacrifice to God. Just the moment Abraham was going to do it, an angel appeared and provided a replacement sacrifice for them. This story is found in Genesis 22.

God actually went further as we know, God sent his Son Jesus Christ to be a living sacrifice for us. Just because Christ died for our sins, don’t mean we continue sinning. It means we should be like Christ and refrain from sin. We must stop and repent. Repent to turn away or a changed heart.
