Sinking Souls – Titanic Museum Review

Another place I want to take you on a review is The Titanic Museum Attraction located in Pigeon Forge, TN. I did my review visit on May 10, 2014. This attraction stands out because it looks like a giant Titanic boat outside. When, I was at WonderWorks and got to talk to a family, they said last year they went to the Titanic Attraction and enjoyed it. Their eldest daughter enjoyed it. So it got me thinking a bit about the Titanic.

Saving the sinking souls

One thing I wonder about those aboard the Titanic is how many of them were truly saved? How many of them had the death bed experience, similar to the criminal on the cross who came to know Jesus. I wonder how many people on the ship was trying to save the lost and witness to them? This tragic event shows we never know when our time will come. So it’s good idea to share the Gospel to everyone!

No cameras or cell phones

Let me first off let you know and be aware, you cannot bring in any cameras nor can you bring in your cell phones. Cell phones must be turned completely off before you can enter the Titanic Museum.

Boarding Passes

As you board the Titanic Museum, the crew will hand you a boarding pass of someone that was on the Titanic. I got Alfred Crawford, who was a crew member. He was the bedroom steward. He was age 36 and from Southampton, England. My daughter, Amber got Irene Harris, a first class passenger. She was age 35 from New York City. My daughter and I went very early in the morning. This way we can beat the traffic and not spend long hours in line. Plus we got to park really close to the entrance. I think were were one of the first few people aboard. We spent around 2 1/2 hours there. I am sure we could have spent more time if we wanted. My main interest was about the religious aspect of Titanic.

I was able to go a few times. My last time I gone to the Titanic Museum, I asked if they had Pastor John Haprer’s boarding pass and they did and let me have that one.

Audio Players

You are given an audio player so you can hear about certain scenes in the Titanic. They have a youth/children guided audio and an adult guided audio. You are welcome to listen to both of the audio tours if you wish. These audio’s offer great insight as well about the Titanic.

Friendly & knowledgeable

The two people who I saw a lot throughout the Titanic was Ron and Hunter. They were the ones to greet us as we approached the Titanic. We were greeting with a very warm and friendly greeting. Throughout our journey of the Titanic we got to see them in various places of the ship. Both Ron and Hunter were very knowledgable about the Titanic. Plus, they both were very friendly and helpful. Ron has been at the Pigeon Forge Titanic since it opened nearly four years ago. Hunter said she has been with the Titanic for over one year.

Faith important on Titanic

Titanic Attraction’s web site offers some religious information. They claim to have had 8 religious heroes aboard the Titanic. They do mention there was 3 Baptist Pastors aboard the titanic as well. Rev. Robert Bateman, who lived in Knoxville, TN was also aboard the Titanic. Rev. John Harper is one who said “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be Saved” (Acts 16:31) just moments before he died.

Faith is very important on the Titanic. I was glad to hear the crew was able to freely share their faith with people visiting the Titanic. Actually it was encouraged. When you first board the Titanic, make sure to tell them you are of faith, that you are a Christian, etc. You will get a special cross sticker to wear.

Ron talked to me throughout different places of the Titanic about John Harper, a Baptist pastor aboard the Titanic. Hunter shared stories about the missionaries aboard the Titanic. Both of them were not afraid to show their faith either while talking about them. Plus the both were knowledgable about the people they were talking about. It was like they had passion or knew them personally. The both each gave me a book to read. Ron suggested one that talks about Harper and Hunter gave me one that talked about a missionary family.

Please feel free to follow my blog as I plan to do a separate blog about Pastor John Harper and the Missionary Family (The Caldwell’s) aboard the Titanic. I plan to do some research on them and post it on my blog. Both of these inspired me as I learned of them from Ron and Hunter.

I was also shared that they have a meeting at 8:30 a.m., before they open at 9 a.m. They discuss yesterday what went on and they discuss the current days operation. Then they also mention people to lift up in prayer.

There was also a Catholic priest aboard the Titanic. He also loved photography. His name was Father Francis Browne.

That is just some of the religious facts on their website: titanicattraction.com/titanic-religion.php

The Recovered Bible

Titanic Bible - Picture compliments of Titanic Museum

Currently the Pigeon Forge location (May 2014) has a recovered Bible on display. It is said to belong to a Knoxville resident, Reverend Bateman that was aboard the Titanic. This Bible is from the King James Version and also has the Greek translation in it. This Bible will be featured at the Pigeon Forge location until August according to the media release e-mail that was sent to me.

This is a quote from the Press Release about this Bible.

“There were 2,208 passengers and crew members on board Titanic, mostly Christians carrying personal bibles with them, but when the ship sank, only one of hundreds of bibles were saved,” explains Mary Kellogg Joslyn, co-owner of the Titanic Museum Attractions. “It’s an amazing, spiritual story that we’re honored and proud to share with our guests when they reach the Memorial Room where this priceless bible is enshrined,” says Kellogg Joslyn.

I have always heard it said that usually when disasters occur that one of the things that usually survive is the Bible. This includes home fires, flooding, and more. I am not totally sure how accurate that is, but that amazing that it does. I believe that is just the work of God protecting His Word! (Like the Bible that survived a fiery crash in Memphis, TN)

As they were preparing this Bible the pages fell open to John 6:16-21. Those scriptures read …

16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Educational Trip

The Titanic offers many educational lessons such as Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Geography, Math and much more. They even offer a Home school scavenger hunt. You can get answers to questions like where did the Titanic depart from. When did it sink? How long did it take to sink the Titanic? and Much more. So a great place to study a lot of subjects with the family.

Iceberg Dead Ahead!

As we got closer to where the iceberg was, the temperature of the museum started to get colder and colder. With the coldest room being where the iceberg was. They have an ice wall for you to touch and feel how cold an iceberg would be. Plus you can try to see how long you can keep your hand in the 28º water.

My daughters thoughts

Amber said she liked how friendly the people were there. She liked seeing the religious stuff. She liked how the woman was dressed as a nurse in the first area we went to and it was nurses week. She said Ron was very nice. Hunter knew a lot about stuff on the Titanic. According to the boarding guidelines of Titanic, if you were 16 and older, you were considered an adult. She just turned 16, so she thought it was great to be considered and adult. She also added that she found it interesting that her person fell going up the Grand Stairway.

My thoughts

I really loved seeing the religious artifacts about the Titanic. The preachers, priest, monks and even the missionaries aboard the Titanic. Not to mention seeing a Bible that was recovered from the Titanic. What is interesting is that it belonged to a Knoxville resident. Knoxville is where I was born. I also enjoyed how knowledgable and very friendly the crew was. I did get to talk to a few other crew members throughout my visit to the Titanic. All of them did make me feel very accommodating. Just like my daughter the nurse when we first arrived in the first area of the museum was pretty cool. I think I enjoyed her accent. I asked her where she is from and she told me she was from Ireland. She was very knowledgeable too. I am not sure her real name as she was acting as a character aboard the Titanic.

I honestly believe that so far of all the attractions I have reviewed, this has been my favorite. I highly recommend you go aboard and check out the religious information that your visit has to offer and do tell them you are a Christian to get the Christian Cross Sticker.

Now they take a picture at one location of the Titanic. They use a screen in the background to put different backdrops in from the one pose. I will have to say the pictures are a bit pricey. They will give you a card and the card will let you share the photo on Facebook and also purchase them online. It usually takes 24 to 48 hours before that photo to appear. One note, the photo sets are a bit pricey. Plus, currently they do not put them on USB dongles, like most other area attractions.

Locations

  • Brandson, MO
  • Pigeon Forge, TN

They switch some of the exhibits artifacts so that they can be shared between the two locations.

Finial thoughts

I am glad to hear that there were people aboard making sure people were saved before their last minutes of life. John Harper was one of these men. I have a story to share about him that I learned from Ron, but I will save that for my post about him.

I encourage you to take a voyage on the Titanic. This is a great place for a church group to go, a school field trip or even a home school project. They have a learning tour too for those who are home schooled or even a school trip. I am sure some souls were saved while others some were not. But still good to know that there was some that were. I hope to be able to give up my life so others can be saved.

This is taken from the Titanic’s Web site.

The Titanic Museum is host to youth groups from all over the United States. Many lessons can be learned from this tragic event, the greatest of which is knowing that God is in control no matter what the circumstances. Psalm 56:4 says, “In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me”. Non believers do not have this peace and the fear they must have felt as the Titanic sank is unimaginable. What better way to teach our children than through application that with God in their life, they never have to fear; nothing and no one can ever harm them. Nothing is outside of His control.
