According to Jesus, life is not all about us, and yet everything in our culture (including that burger place) tries to tell us to have it our way. Craig Groeschel

“According to Jesus, life is not all about us, and yet everything in our culture (including that burger place) tries to tell us to have it our way.” Craig Groeschel - The words of Jesus Christ offer a profound counter-narrative. Renowned pastor Craig Groeschel succinctly captures this sentiment in his thought-provoking quote. In dissecting this quote, we uncover layers of wisdom that challenge contemporary societal norms and beckon us to embrace a more selfless existence.

Jesus’ teachings consistently emphasize the importance of selflessness and prioritizing the needs of others above our own. One of the most iconic teachings, the Golden Rule, encapsulates this principle: “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31). This timeless maxim serves as a compass for navigating human interactions, reminding us to extend compassion, empathy, and understanding to those around us.

Contrary to the pervasive message of self-centeredness promoted by modern culture, Jesus invites us to adopt a mindset of servanthood. He famously washed the feet of his disciples, demonstrating humility and setting a powerful example of selfless love (John 13:1-17). In a world that glorifies personal ambition and achievement, this act serves as a poignant reminder that true greatness is found in service to others.

Groeschel’s reference to “that burger place” aptly highlights the omnipresence of consumerism and the relentless pursuit of personal gratification in contemporary society. The prevailing ethos of “having it our way” extends far beyond fast-food chains; it permeates every aspect of our lives, shaping our desires, priorities, and relationships. However, Jesus calls us to a higher standard—one characterized by sacrificial love and genuine concern for the well-being of others.

Which if you know company slogans, “have it your way,” comes from the fast food burger joint called Burger King. Which they started that slogan in 1974.

Embracing Jesus’ teachings requires a paradigm shift—one that challenges us to transcend the narrow confines of self-interest and embrace a broader perspective that encompasses the needs of the collective. It entails cultivating virtues such as compassion, generosity, and humility, which lie at the heart of authentic discipleship.

Moreover, the pursuit of selflessness does not imply self-neglect or martyrdom. Instead, it involves a holistic approach to personal and social flourishing, recognizing that our well-being is intricately intertwined with that of others. As we align our lives with the selfless example set by Jesus, we discover a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment rooted in love and interconnectedness.

This reminds me of an old video that I saw it was a comedy skit of kids going to a fast food, joint and ordering what kind of Faith they want. It was called McFaith: Order up Your Faith by BlueFish TV.

In conclusion, Craig Groeschel’s quote serves as a reminder of the stark contrast between the values espoused by Jesus and those propagated by contemporary culture. By heeding Jesus’ call to selflessness, we not only counteract the pervasive ethos of individualism but also contribute to the creation of a more compassionate and just world. As we strive to live according to Jesus’ teachings, may we continually seek opportunities to serve others, embodying the transformative power of selfless love in our daily lives.
