Taps …

Taps performed in Arlington National Cemetery (summer and winter)

The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”

The buglers of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” perform over 5000 missions a year in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
Featured here are SSG Jesse Tubb (summer) and SSG Drew Fremder (winter)

As you hear Taps playing think of the men and women who gave their life for the freedoms we have. John 15:13 comes to my mind, no greater love that one to lay down their life for another and these brave men and women have done exactly that to help keep our freedoms that we have here in America.

On Memorial Day we celebrate those fallen men and women who died giving us our freedom we have today. We thank you very much and thanks to your family too.

I figured since I was sharing this video of Taps, I would give you a little bit of information about Taps as well.

Above Video features notes saying …

  • Taps was first played at Harrison’s Landing, Virginia in July 1862.
  • Within 9 months it was adopted by both the Union and the Confederate Forces
  • In 1981 Taps became a standard component of U.S. Military funerals

More notes about taps …

  • Played on a bugle
  • French bugle is a tattoo
  • It can be played on a trumpet too
  • Typical length is 59 seconds
  • Also meant lights out, bed time, last call of the day
  • The word “taps” is an alteration of the obsolete word “taptoo,” derived from the Dutch “taptoe.” Taptoe was the command — “Tap toe!” — to shut (“toe to”) the “tap” of a keg.

Did you know there are lyrics to Taps?

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest
God is nigh.

Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar, drawing near
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise for our days
Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars’, ‘neath the sky’
As we go, this we know
God is nigh.
