Purple Heart Day honors

This date honors General Washington’s 1782 orders establishing the Badge of Military Merit, the inspiration for today’s Purple Heart. The badge consisted of a purple cloth heart with silver braided edge. Only three are known to be awarded during the Revolutionary War.1

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. military.2

The Purple Heart Foundation says take the time to listen to stories our veterans tell us. Take your time and show interest in them. This is what they share on their blog, “Instead of waving a flag, take some time to listen to and share a veteran’s story of honor and courage. Through their stories we can truly celebrate this holiday and honor the sacrifice of all our veterans.”3

Finally, I want to say thank you to all service men and women who have served for our country. They give up everything and sacrifice a lot for our freedoms. When you see a veteran tell them thank you for their service. I do that when I see someone wear their veteran hat proudly.
