Cabbage Patch Kids and Our Adoption into God's Family — In the heartwarming world of toys, few stories are as endearing as that of the Cabbage Patch Kids. These unique dolls, each with their own names and birth certificates, captured the hearts of children around the world. They weren't just toys; they were little personalities adopted into families, bringing joy and a sense of belonging.

This beautiful picture of adoption mirrors a profound spiritual truth found in the Christian faith. The Bible speaks of a divine adoption, where believers are brought into the family of God, not by natural birth, but by spiritual rebirth and grace.

Ephesians 1:5 tells us, “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” Just as a Cabbage Patch Kid is chosen and brought home, we too are chosen by God and brought into His eternal family.

In Romans 8:15, we read, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him, we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” This passage reveals the intimate relationship we have with God as our Father, a relationship that is as close and personal as a child calling out to their daddy.

I even had a Cabbage Patch boy doll as a kid in the 1980’s. In 1983, the renowned black astronaut was known by the name “Astronaut Xavier Roberts,” affectionately dubbed as “Cabbage Patch Boy.”

I even had a Cabbage Patch boy doll as a kid in the 1980’s. In 1983, the renowned black astronaut was known by the name “Astronaut Xavier Roberts,” affectionately dubbed as “Cabbage Patch Boy.” Exactly like the one in the image above. I forgot if I renamed him in his adoption and if I did what name. I’m not even sure what ever happened to him either. I just remember having him.

The Cabbage Patch Kids come with a promise of care and attention from their new families. Similarly, God promises to care for us, to discipline us for our good, and to conform us to the image of His Son, as stated in Hebrews 12:9-10 and Romans 8:29.

Our adoption into God’s family is not a result of our efforts or worthiness but is a gift of love from the Father. 1 John 3:1 exclaims, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” It’s a love that calls us out of our orphaned state and into a family where we are known, loved, and cherished.

As Cabbage Patch Kids are unique and individually crafted, so are we, crafted by God’s hands, each with a purpose and a place in His kingdom. Our adoption is a testament to His grace, a transformation from being lost to being found, from being alone to belonging to a family that will never let us go.

Here are some lesser-known facts about Cabbage Patch Kids:

  1. Origins: Cabbage Patch Kids were created by Xavier Roberts, who developed them in 1978 as handcrafted dolls. They were originally called “Little People” and were sold at local craft fairs.
  2. Inspiration: Roberts was inspired by the German soft-sculptured dolls called “Raggedy Ann and Andy,” as well as Appalachian “hillbilly” dolls, which he encountered during his travels.
  3. Cabbage Patch Adoption: Each Cabbage Patch Kid came with a unique name and birth certificate. They were “adopted” rather than purchased, adding a sentimental value to the dolls.
  4. Coleco Partnership: In 1982, the toy company Coleco acquired the rights to mass-produce Cabbage Patch Kids, leading to their widespread popularity.
  5. Christmas Craze: In 1983, Cabbage Patch Kids became a holiday craze, with parents frantically searching for the dolls to fulfill their children’s wishes. This led to “Cabbage Patch Riots” in stores and long waiting lists.
  6. Television Specials: Cabbage Patch Kids were featured in several animated television specials during the 1980s, including “The Cabbage Patch Kids’ First Christmas” and “The Cabbage Patch Kids: The Clubhouse.”
  7. World Record: In 2004, a record-breaking event took place in Georgia, USA, where 5,000 Cabbage Patch Kids were displayed together, setting a Guinness World Record.
  8. Evolution: Over the years, Cabbage Patch Kids have undergone various design changes and adaptations, including the introduction of preemie dolls, holiday-themed dolls, and themed collections.
  9. Collectibility: Some rare or limited-edition Cabbage Patch Kids dolls have become valuable collectibles among enthusiasts, with certain vintage dolls fetching high prices in the secondary market.
  10. Continued Popularity: Despite being introduced in the 1980s, Cabbage Patch Kids continue to enjoy a level of popularity, with new versions and iterations released periodically to appeal to new generations of children and collectors alike.

These facts highlight the enduring legacy and cultural impact of the Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon.

In conclusion, the story of the Cabbage Patch Kids is more than just a tale of toys finding homes. It’s a reflection of the greater story of redemption and love that God offers to each of us. Through Jesus Christ, we are adopted into God’s family, and just like those beloved dolls, we find our names written in the book of life, forever part of a family that is eternal and divine.

Let us cherish this gift of adoption, living as children of God, fully embraced by His grace and love.
