Are we a good person based on the 10 commandments? A Test to Take

The 10 Commandments – Bezeugen tract

Do you think you are a good person? Let’s look at the 10 commandments as a basis to see if we truly are a good person?

Do you know what the 10 Commandments are? Can you name them?

Do you know where in the Bible it talks about the 10 Commandments?

Let’s look at Exodus 20:1-17.

1st Commandment:

“You shall have no other gods before me”. Exodus 20:3

Pretty basic, a child of God should not worship or be involved with any other god of any religious belief. Also another aspect of that is that we as humans can end up worshipping many things as “gods”. Things such as money, cars, women, men, famous people, etc.

In Matthew 4:10 Jesus said, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

God Should be number 1! I Am Second!

2nd Commandment:

“You shall not make for yourself an image.” Exodus 20:4.

Luke 16:13 says “ No one can serve two masters.” What does this mean to you? This commandment talks about not making idols for yourself to worship. Do not bow down to anything.

3rd Commandment:

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” Exodus 20:7

Do not swear by the Lord’s name or take the Lord’s name in vain.

Do not use your lips to dishonor God.

Using God’s name in vain is Blasphemy.

4th Commandment:

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Exodus 20:8

The Sabbath day is Sunday, God explains that he gives us six days to get our work done and the seventh day, or the Sabbath, is to be kept holy as a day of rest.

How many days did it take God to make the World?

What did he do on the next day?

God created the world and everything in it in six days and rested on the seventh and we are meant to rest on the seventh day as the Lord did.

5th Commandment:

“Honor your father and your mother.” Exodus 20:12

Very simple God commands us to honor our fathers and our mothers. This means no back talking and respecting them.

6th Commandment:

“You shall not murder.” Exodus 20:13

Matthew 5:21-22

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. ’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment

(Matthew 5:21-22 ESV)

7th Commandment:

“You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14

Matthew 5:28 says, “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

This shows that adultery is not just cheating, adultery can be the lusting after another person. How many of you are guilty of this?

8th Commandment:

“You shall not steal.” Exodus 20:15.

Do not take anything that does not belong to you.

You taken a pencil from someone that doesn’t belong to you?

Downloaded Music off the internet?

What do you call someone who steals?

*a theif

9th Commandment:

“You shall not give false testimony.” Exodus 20:16.

Matthew 12:36 says, “Everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken.”

So what does this mean??????? Don’t LIE!!! One day you will have to answer for every lie and false accusation that has ever come out of your mouth.

What do you call someone who lies?

*a Liar

10th Commandment:

“You shall not covet.” Exodus 20:17.

Be happy with what God has given you. Do not seek to have what other people have. Maybe the latest Video Game that your friend or classmate has. Or a car that your neighbor has. God gives us what we need. Not what we want.

Things could also include person’s money, car, girlfriend, house, their life, etc.

Are we truly a good person?

Based on these laws and these laws only and if were were held accountable based only on these laws, would we be guilty or innocent? Note, I said “IF”.

So how many of you feel that you have broken any of these commandments? So do you still feel you are a good person?

Anyone know of anyone who can pass this good person test? Jesus can!

Our thoughts

How would we like it if we had a chip in our brain that could record our every thought for a week, then play it in front of our family and friends. Would we like that?

I would say not. Remember God sees that 24/7 in all of us.

We All Sin!

20 There is certainly no righteous man on the earth who does good and never sins (Ecclesiastes 7:20 HCSBFree)

10 as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away; all alike have become useless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one (Romans 3:10-12 HCSBFree)

23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23 HCSBFree)

People believe that you can go to Heaven doing good things. Wrong.

Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life.

These laws are God’s standards for us to live by. But God gave us a great gift! He gave us the gift of life through Jesus Christ.

One Way to Heaven

There is only one way to Heaven That is through Jesus Christ. He died and paid for our sins on the Cross.

Let’s look at it this way. Say you went to court for a bad crime. You ask the judge to let you go, he doesn’t let you go. God is a just judge. The punishment must fit the crime. But someone came into the court and said I love this person, I will pay the one million dollar fine. How would you feel to this person? Wouldn’t you feel grateful for that person?

Jesus did the same thing. He paid the price for us. He took on all of our sin. We have to accept Him as our personal savior. We have to repent, or to turn away from our sins.

Next steps

How are some ways we can try to strive to sin less. We all sin, but we can try to strive to sin less. To not live in sin or have a license to sin as some say.

IF you haven’t already asked Jesus into your heart, you need to do that.

Ask Jesus to forgive your sins, but remember you also must forgive others too, for your sin to be forgiven.

Repent of your sins. To turn away to strive not to live in sin or continue doing sin. But yes we will all fall, but as Christians you do not want to sin anymore and when you do, Holy Spirit will come and convict you.
